Pokhara, 20 August 2026 — The School of Engineering (SoE), Pokhara University, organized an interactive meeting and discussion with a representative from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nepal, faculty members, and Master’s students on Thursday, 20 August 2026, from 10:30 to 12:00.
The session focused on “Protecting Livelihoods and Assets at Risk from GLOF and Climate Change-Induced Flooding.” Mr. Deepak KC from UNDP Nepal shared insights on climate change, resilience, and the risks associated with Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), with particular emphasis on UNDP Nepal’s initiatives for GLOF risk reduction.
The interactive session provided an opportunity for faculty members and Master’s students working in the areas of water, environment, and climate resilience to engage with UNDP Nepal and exchange knowledge and ideas. The discussion also explored potential areas of collaboration between UNDP Nepal and Pokhara University, including research, data collection, knowledge generation, awareness raising, and capacity building. Potential areas for Master’s thesis research, particularly in hydropower and sanitary engineering, were also discussed. The participants further discussed opportunities for collaboration related to the recently announced PhD in Engineering programme at Pokhara University and possible engagement under the new GCF-funded project on GLOF risk reduction.
The programme was moderated/opened by Prof. Dr. Binaya Kumar Mishra, Director, School of Engineering, Pokhara University. More than 30 faculty members and Master’s students participated in the session. The programme concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Niranjan Shrestha, Executive Director, Pokhara University Research Center, who summarized the key discussions and highlighted the importance of continued engagement and collaboration.
The session marked a valuable opportunity to strengthen academic and institutional collaboration between Pokhara University and UNDP Nepal in addressing emerging challenges related to climate change, GLOF risks, and climate resilience in Nepal. It also provided a platform for identifying opportunities for joint research, student engagement, knowledge sharing, and capacity development in these critical areas.
